Brendan Mims

Brendan T. Mims is a transformational educator and visionary leader with a proven record of driving sustainable academic improvement and community engagement. Most recently, he served as Superintendent of the historically recognized Bedford-Stuyvesant Community School District 16 in Brooklyn, New York. Under his leadership, District 16 achieved significant academic growth, including a +20% increase in reading proficiency and a +30% increase in mathematics proficiency among students in grades three through eight.


Prior to his superintendency, Mims was the founding principal of MS 358 in Queens, New York, the first Magnet Schools of America (MSA) Certified National Demonstration School in both New York City and New York State. His innovative approach to instructional leadership and equity-centered school design earned national recognition, and in 2022, he was named National Principal of the Year by Magnet Schools of America.


In recognition of his steadfast commitment to educational excellence, equity, and community partnership, Mims received the Dr. Albert Vann Vanguard Leadership Award from the New York State Association of Black, Puerto Rican, and Asian Legislators, Inc.

Mims continues to collaborate with community organizations in the arts, sciences, and business sectors to ensure students have access to a well-rounded, high-quality education that prepares them to think critically, lead confidently, and thrive in college, careers, and entrepreneurship. By fostering strong partnerships with families and communities, Mims is dedicated to sustaining a culture of inclusivity, innovation, and excellence in every learning environment he serves.
